Which kind of paint should I use on my zuma. I don't want to have to buy an airbrush. I am just going to use spray can type stuff. I am unsure what kind I should use though. I hear metal paint is obviously going to damage the plastic, but other than that, what is good and what is no good? Apparently Kryon Fusion is good for plastic but they are fairly limited in colours.
Thanks a lot guys,
Kyle.

I used Dupont flat black... from schucks auto part store...
Said it worked for plastic as well... Turned out good...
also a hint from experience.... DO NOT USE adhesive promoter on the panels unless they are sanded to bare plastic! Or you'll get horrible bubbling that is almost impossible to remove...
Also, coats and coats of paint! Will make it look better, and in the long run last longer.
I did mine in flat black... it looks awesome! Very "big bike looking" instead of before hwo it looked "toyish", I had it painted Mirage "ICE"... and it just didn't look good!

I used Testors model paint. it is a little bit more expensive, but it looks way good, and it is designed for plastic. i went through about six cans though. like jered said, you have to put on at least three coats per panel if you want it to look good, and last long. i also did mine flat black. it looks so sexy!!

It was only a matter of time that Americans would have "Stealth" scooters......wonder if the panels reflect Police radar better :p .....Oh..crx...Black and neon green Grips would go good with your new wheels..

this doesnt apply to flat black but if your going to clear it... tons of clear is the key for deep looking paint. im not sure if you have experience painting but from my car painting experience.. the key is to sand it smooth, wet sand 600 is pretty much a good starting point. if after everything is done and there is little flaw you can wet sand with 1500 - 1000 grit... and then buff it. i use 3M buff and 3M hand glaze for show room finish. yeah our panels are tiny but if u do sand it either wash it with water or use a tacky cloth to get all the particles off before painting.

Which kind of canned clear coat do you suggest? I am hoping my local hardware store or Canadian tire is going to have the paint and clear coat.
Thanks,
Kyle

most auto parts stores will stock paint (colored) and clear coat...
any paint they sell should work fine...
just make sure it's permenent... I wouldn't use engine paint... on the body panels... but as regular paint should be fine...

Most automotive paint stores will put there paint in spray cans so you could get any color of kind of paint you wanted.

go to a walmart or a craft store and just get some high gloss krylon, it actually works extremely well for rattlecaning plastic so long as its throughly cleaned beforehand

I went with Krylon Fusion, finally. I want to do some masking now that I have one colour down. How long should I wait? The can says 7 days for chip resistant..but I hope I dont have to wait that long...
Thanks guys,
Kyle.

I painted mine and put it on the next morning...
BTW: I pulled the panels off as you WILL get overspray if you think you can paint with just taping stuff off...

Yeah, I have the panels off. I put on white today. If you are saying you just masked right on top of your first colour the next morning, that is great. That's what I plan on doing tomorrow if it's no problem.
I am going to use blue masking tape.
And no paint came off from your first colour when you pulled up the tape after your second?
Thanks,
Kyle.

no... I painted it all one color...
I placed the panels on the scooter the next morning...
guess your planning on a 2 tone? Never taped on mine... so I can't say when it's good to tape on the paint...
cripplediguana
04-27-2005, 12:08 AM
Yeah, a two tone. Bugger, I thought you were saying you had done what I am trying to do. I am just worried about pulling paint off. So, that being said: Has anyone done a two tone with krylon fusion by masking after they have done their first, lighter, colour?
Thanks,
Kyle.

When most are "dry to the touch" if you don't put extra pressure on it to lay it down... it should come up okay if it's on for a few hours...
even masking tape sticks more the longer it's on... If you put it on and take it off within 24 hours you should be okay...
At least I'd think...

Thanks a lot :)
Yeah, the Krylon guys said 'it may or may not work'. But he mentioned I would for sure have to wait 7 days if I don't do it now within the 24 hours of the first colour. I am going to try it. If it doesn't work, well, I will just sand her down and paint again tomorrow or something.
I'll post later after I have tried it out.
Ciao for now,
Kyle.

keep in mind that you are going to have a "raised line" where the colors meet. You will need to sand this, then add lots of clearcoat! Also, blue tape is a wise choice!! ;)

Paint Guys might prove me wrong..but they use the Green masking tape for Laquer ...they say it leaves less of a line..providing you seal it well with your finger... John

She's done.
I pressed the blue tape down around the edges, but not quite well enough in some places, unfortunately. Overall, it's nothing a little touch up won't fix. It obviously isn't professional up close, but hey, I am not professional.
By the way, tape didn't pull up my paint one bit.
Have a good one,
Kyle.

I think I have come up with a good solution, after I clear it. I can probably get some 1/16" pin stripes and go around my shapes. Anyone know how readily available these are? I think they would be the perfect alternative to touching up those rough edges with my less than steady hands.
Have a good one,
Kyle.

yeah... schucks auto parts... or napa should carry pin striping for around $10 for a good size roll of it... in all sorts of different widths...
Lay the pin stripe and then clear coat over it... to give it the "seamless" smooth finish... yeah...
cripplediguana
04-28-2005, 01:34 AM
Oh really? I didn't knowit was ok to just lay down the pin stripe and clear coat on top of it. That will look a heck of a lot nicer. Thanks for the tip.
Some of my shapes are quite round and circular, how hard is it to bend the stripes?
(I don't want to give away my design until I can provide a picture of my finished product)
I'll be off to Napa in a few days, wahoo. This is a good idea me thinks, it will make my paint job nice and clean.
Have a good one,
Kyle.

check on the packaging... there should be some you can clear coat over top of... so it doesn't peel off and such...
but you need to read the packaging...
Hurry the heck up with the pics... we want to see this custom paint job...

Well, it's definitely different. I may just leave my slightly rough edges because they aren't noticeble beyond 3-4 feet away.
I have to wait 7 days to touch and clear it according to Krylon. And probably another 7 days to actually put it on the bike.
I'm all about surprises. So I don't want to show her off until completion. But I'll try to be quick about it.
Now to tackle that rusty exhaust..
Have a good one,
Kyle.

Touching up is the devil!
So today I masked, very roughly, the places I didnt want paint on them so I could touch up some places where the wrong colour hit. I ended up with lines every where :( I was thinking that would probably happen as I did it too..bleh. I wasn't planning on doing a sand on the ridges initially, but I am going to have to now. On top of that, I decided to brush on some of the paint in some places, and my first attempt I brushed a tad much and it took away paint right down to the yamaha blue colour. Fortunatly it was a small spot.
Blah, oh well, she's coming along. I am not going to fiddle with it any more after sanding. Just the clear and its done like dinner.
Tip of the day: Don't try to fix it, it makes it worse!
Have a good one,
Kyle.

:worship: That paint job looks great. That is a better theft deterent than fingerprints. Nice BOLD move. Is the exhaust heat resistant paint? That will get you a lot of attention. Maybe the add people at Chick Filet will hire you for some of their adds. ::handleba

Yeah -she be heat resistant.
Also, ya, good thinking -Anyone takes my scoot it shouldn't be hard to track them down.
Thanks,
Kyle

I can't believe nobody's mentioned krylon FUSION paint, made especially FOR plastics! I just used the gloss black on the handlebars panel, after stripping the old crappy metallic black rustoleum paintjob off of it that I did years back, sanding the hell out of it, then wet sanding the hell out of it, then doing 2 coats, then wet sanding that, and 1 final coat. The thing looks FACTORY FRESH! I can't wait for my OEM black matching front panel to arrive! :naught:

I remember someone mentioning it before, before but really with good prep on the plastic you don't need the fusion paint, and the paint, you can get put in spray cans at a paint shop is better quality anyway, it won't fade, in like 2years like store spray paint.

the rustoleum started to get a little crackled in the place where the speedo/gauges screw into the plastic from underneath, i think that was a partcularly brittle color of paint. So I'm glad to have all of it off and some flexible paint on there. By the way, awesome job, Iguana! I didn't even notice all those extra posts since I'd written that remark about the fusion paint.

I used Fusion ;) Then after I used Krylon's Clear Odorless. The problem with the clear though, was that I applied just as krylon said and it came out textured(which I happened to like anyway, but still). Furthmore, after a couple weeks before finally taking her out, some rain drops sitting on the clear left white marks(they eventually cleared up again). Both the Krylon guy and myself were surprised. Now that we have had a few good warm sunny days, I hope its fine. Maybe tomorrow I will try a drop of water on it again.
And thanks. I'm quite proud of my scoot. The odd thing is, I get more comments on it being a scooter than it looking like a cow. Infact, most people don't realize it's cow until I tell them. It's odd.
Anyway, have a good one,
Kyle.
