Not sure if this is the right place...

I am having trouble with my moped. The electric start does not work so I kick start it. Go on a 10+ minute ride without problems - but once I shut it off I cannot kick it over again.

The mechanic gave me a tune up and rebuilt my carb thinking that was the issue and told me the battery was dead - he said the electric start would fix this and even put a big battery thing on it and electric started it right up.

I bought a new battery and sure enough the turn signals and horn work - but no electric start.

Any suggestions? Thanks and sorry if this is the wrong spot.

First off all, Welcome to Provoscooter!
Now about your scooter, when you push the starter button, can you hear the starter move at all?
I'm thinking you have a bad starter.

Are you remembering to pull a brake lever while pushing the button?

The mechanic started the moped right away. When I press the button I do not hear anything. I also do not press the break.

Wow, after a few people said something about pressing the break I went out and tried it... and boy I feel dumb. I have owned 5 mopeds (all in the honda brand) and never had to do this, but then again maybe I have always kick started it.

Thank you for the cheap and easy fix.
Hopefully at some point I can contribute back.

It happens to the best of us! Congrats on putting that issue to rest.

Please dont call a scooter a moped lol. Mopeds have pedals and scooters don't.

That's very true, Zeon. The Moped guys get even more upset about this than us scooter guys. Either way, you should know what you are riding. Moped, noped, scooter, motorcycle. The lines have been drawn, and it's not a guessing game.

haha this cracked me up, and I am sure you were serious. So I have a Scooter?

I'm pretty sure the state of Michigan categorizes it upon registration as a Moped... but its Michigan...

And a quick hop across the Detroit river; it's classified as a limited speed motorcycle..laugh..

If you are depending on government to decide things for you, then I rest my case.:) In the strictest sense of the word, though, a moPED must have pedals. I still call my Grand Cherokee a station wagon. If I called it a truck, I'd be lying, and I'm to embarrased to admit I own an SUV. The reg. does say station wagon. Be glad Michigan got it wrong, because Moped regulations are always more linient than Motorcycle. Here in CT, scooters are divided by CC and transmission type. Any automatic 49cc is considered a 'ped for the purposes of registration exemption, etc. A larger scooter, or anything with a manual clutch or manual gears is considered a motorcycle.

Some states divide by speed which is silly because you can always change that as we all know. Here in florida its either scooter or motorcycle. Mopeds aren't anything and if you get a cop thats bored he will get you off the road. Motorcycles we all know about that one. My ex gf drives a piaggio fly 150cc which is the same aesthetically as my friends piaggio fly 50cc except its 12-15mph faster and far better acceleration and she drives it around and doesn't bother with the moto license yet...she's putting it off. So its all subjective but Im not pickin on you i just have a few of my GF's friends who call my awesome zuma a "moped" and it bugs the living crap out of me and i let them know "Its a scooter not a moped, Mopeds have pedals"! LOL :D Scooters have step through frames and have most engine components covered and thats what differentiates them from moto's in appearance and safety and of course the drivetrain and smaller displacement.

Don't get me started about the "government" bunch of lying snakes in the swamp of Pelosi, Reid and Obama land! Thats enough of that.

Count your blessings. In Ontario (Canada); Mopeds & Scooters (under 50cc) are considered limited speed motorcycles. This means it must be plated & insured any you need to get a motorcycle licence to operate it. Your motorcycle will have a "L" endorsement meaning you can't (legally) ride anything over 50cc. If your scooter is over 50cc; you don't get that "limited speed" endorsement & you can ride anything from a 32cc moped up to a 1800cc motorcycle.
