View Full Version : Starting Zuma in the morning

When I start my 2002 Zuma in the morning after it's been sitting all night and the engine is cold, it starts up and runs at a normal idle for a few seconds, then all the sudden the motor starts running a LOT faster. The back wheel starts spinning and it keeps doing this for about 2 minutes and then the motor slows down to normal. This has always happened since I bought it and would like to ask someone here that has this model of Zuma if theirs does the same thing. Is this normal? If not, what would be wrong with it? I figure the motor shouldn't race like that. I think it should maybe raise the idle a little after starting it cold, but not that much.

Sounds like the auto-choke doing it's job......

Does your Zuma raise the engine speed up that much after starting it cold?

yep i have an auto choke , on a 19mm carb and does a similar thing.. sometimes fast enough to get the rear wheel moving just a bit but not spinning fast... i think its normal. dont worry about it.

Not sure but I can check it out tonight for you.

I haven't ever heard the auto-choke that I know of- I jump on it and go without warming it up....

I don't ride when it is below 65-70 degrees, if it is wet, if the wind is blowing too hard and so on- fair weather to goof off rider only, not as transportation.

Thanks for the reply. That makes me feel better about it. I thought maybe there was a vacuum line off or something that would make it run so fast like that. I've called my Yamaha Dealer and asked the mechanic there about it, and he didn't seem to know if it was normal or not. I wonder if there is anyway to adjust that to slow it down?

well the auto choke is a little pin plunger... im not certain as to how it works but im guessing that at low temp start up, it pushes the pin down into the carb... so if the entire unit was shimmed a little higher it would not be able to choke as much.. maybe lowering the rev... this is all speculation though... its really not a big deal for me though.. to let it rev a little and then get going...

My 2004 Zuma starts exactly that way...

Mine does it also. However, when I put stiffer clutch springs on, it did not spin the rear wheel at all.

My 05 Zuma also turns the wheel on cool/cold start up. It is not pulling enough to lurch or anything when it is on the ground (off of the stand). My KZ1000 does this when it is on the upright stand and started cold. I never thought about it being any kind of problem.
