I'm really getting upset about how people in here are clueless about octane. Soooo... I'll explaine it to you. Wideopen... smoken... give me a sec, and if you STILL don't understand it I'll explain it to you.

Gasoline is made in an amazing complex called a Fractional cracking refinery

can anyone argue fractional catalytic process?

Fractional catalytic process is one fraction of a whole catalytic process. If we dabbled in the whole process we would find ourselves wasting our precious time. Therefore the process is divided into fractions so we can focus our time on more important things like scooter forums. :worship:

You must be mistaking. I never asked you any questions about octane you must be thinking of someone else.....

whaatttt me, you must have me confused with someone else...I know everything i need to know about octane

Then I stand corrected. I'm impressed! I think about it all... Methane, Butane, Pentane... just think about it... Heptane and octane... if only heptane had the same anti-knock as octane. But then that's why there is an octane rating. Octane represents 87% of the mix, heptane is the other 13%. Octane has good anti-knock (ping) and heptane sucks.

It's all about dead dinosaurs... and plants. Ultimately it all comes from the sun.

I guess everything is nuclear powered when you think about it.

Anyways since this thread is started I'd figure I would give a quick reference about octane. 93 is adequate all the way to 13:1 it is safe, will not cause any knocking problems for 89 11:1 and under is good. For 87 9:1 and under is good. That's why normal cars don't come with more than 9:1 so they can run regular gas.

Now on the other hand I was using cam 2 in one of my bikes for one of my compression heads because it was 15.5:1 and it would knock with 93.
I used the cam 2 116 octane version just to be safe.

There are other types of gases like methanol, and nitromethane, heptane are common but not for our lil scooters unless your running full out drag setups. :p

Tell us about tetraethyl lead and how it relates to anti-knock...

smokin, that is a real simple way to put the ocatane rating, i like it! :) im sure there are lots of other factors and such...

now what is the compression ratio for TDI motors??

ive read somewhere that some new cars are using CVT technology but has chain drive instead of a belt.. is that right and does anyone know how that works?? are the rings movable or somehting?

i just read that new C36 CDI is 7 speed auto, amazing if u asked me... drooling

yeah... I think Chrysler has a SUV with a CVT tranny now... but I swear it was belt driven.. heck I'm not 100% though...

They claim it's "smooth" shifting... No crap... it doesn't shift... it variates... Oh well...

:)) he he he, yeah it cant shift i guess. sorry i got off topic jered....
a belt driven vehicle that weights 3500lb hmmm cant be great..... oh yeah its a chrysler :)

hey they got to be better than DODGE.. oh wait, never mind! LOL!

or FORD... which I had one bought back by ford...

or then again, chevy...

heck, buy a foriegn car... the tranny will last longer... Just my thoughts... talk about way off topic...

Sure no problem. Tetraethyl lead when mixed with gas, during combustion it creates lead oxide or Pbo.It makes it burn slower and more smoothly. That's how It prevents knocking and gives a higher octane rating.

I don't know if it is what they used in production, but Subaru was using a steel cable type belt in the developement of their CVT Justy. Again, I don't know if that is the production part but it seems like I read it in Pop Sci or Mech years ago. The pics if I remember correctly looked like one of those round serpentine necklaces or bracelets.

Hi Smokin... you know, I have to apologise. I had you so pidgeonholed as a runny-nosed young man that I never considered you might actually understand tetra ethyl lead.

I apologize. :)

Good luck in your college endeavours.

sincerely,

Erika
