I have an 85 Elite 150 just purchased (11000km in apparant good shape .
The Cylinder head gets hot fast either running or warming up at idle. I Did the following :
Checked fluid level ...clean and near top... Resevoir about 1/4 full cold.
Pulled out thermostat... tested ok . Ran engine with no thermostat.... no change still got too hot.
flushed system by putting garden hose on water pump intake. Water flowed freely through the system.
Ran engine with garden hose running slow through pump intake. No overheating . So my assumption is a faulty waterpump.
I took the cover off the pump and looked at the impellor. Like new shiny clean . No sign of water in the oil. Would that mean seals in Pump are OK? There is no leaks elsewhere?
I then took off the gardenhose and put back the hose from the rad. to the pump
Then I took a shot piece of hose and attached it to the outlet from the pump. I held the hose at the same level as the radcap and filled up the open system . With thermostat still out so no flow restrictions. I started the engine . About 1/2 cup of water weakly gushed out of the pipe from the pump outlet then quit. Looks like faulty pump. But I don't see why. Could the shaft not be turning? I'm stumped on this one!
