Any one know the rear shock length eye to "eye" ? I had the idea of swapping in a sportbike shock to the rear if the lengths are close enough. They can be had nice and cheap since most racers, trackday riders toss the stockers for a ohlins or penske etc. I'm sure they would handle much better than stock.

sportbike shock because they use linkages to reduce shock travel and end up with a shorter, lighter shock which will be more likely to fit the zuma.
plus, they are adjustable for preload, compression, and rebound, so we will be able to fine tune the ride.

it looks like we would need a shock with a vertical reservoir instead of a horizontal one.

horizontal:
see pic 1

vertical:
see pic 2

looks like the horizontal will hit plastic.
also, the top has to be "male" and bottom "female", if thats what you call it?? so sadly, no R6 or R1 shocks ;no

yes the verticle...

anyway I to wanted to know the length... I'll just go measure mine here in a few minutes....

I just want something that is adjustable.... instead of the single set up shock.

from center of the bolt to center of the bolt... it's 10 & 7/8" in length...

which is about 270mm or so...

Shock length is 281mm.

is that with the shock unloaded/ uncompressed, fully extended, etc?

Unloaded free length. The nearest commonly available size is 285mm.

well, i just looked at mine....
looks like a remote reservior is an even better option.

i believe most sportbike shocks run about 300-330 mm fully unloaded....
the ones with the right type of mounts are:
cbr 600rr
zx's
gsxr's
all late model, but some have a horizontal res.

on a side note, i accidentally left my 04 in the rain for a few minutes about a week or 2 ago, (when it wasn't so damn cold) and i noticed a few rust spots!!! I HATE rust!!!! it was on a fastener and a little on the stock exhaust and kick starter. I gave it a few squirts of wd40 until it gets a bit warmer and i can deal with it proper.

thanks pinky.... Like I said, that was on the scooter... and with a tape measure... so it's approximate...

Once again pinky... with the tool chest of knowledge... YOu ROCK!

.... does anyone know what shocks are available for the 2002+ zuma's?
i think malossi makes one, maybe top performances??

just in case the swap isn't practical...

I've got a Bitubo and a paioli. Neither one was remarkably better than stock. Now, I used to have a paioli w/ an external reservoir that was like sitting on a cloud. It was nice, but a bit too long and gave me trouble w/ the centerstand and stock airbox not working well.

My next shock will likely be the Fournales. That's a sweet looking shock, but pricey.

Some guys have changed shocks figuring that would improve the Zuma's handling. As Jake implies, the stock shock is really pretty good. The tires are the culprit. Replace them and you'll probably be happy enough with the shock.

I don't have a Zuma but, I did replace the stock shock on my Vento. I got an OKO shock from Ebay for $25 including shipping. It is definatly a much better quality and stiffness over the stock one.

It was a scooter shock. I cant remember for sure but I am pretty sure that it is a 260mm shock which is still the same as the stock size.
