View Full Version : Does anyone here actually OWN a Vino 125?

...if so , i've lots of questions, since I'm thinking of trading in my '04 Zuma...
#1...I've about figured out that pickup from a stop is less important than a higher top end, to make it possible to safely navigate 40 & 45 mph streets....as Yamaha puts it, "Power to safely navigate fast moving surface streets..." I would imagine that the pickup in the midrange 20-35 mph, would be pretty o.k.... Is this a question...well, yes... o_o

I do!
...to make it possible to safely navigate 40 & 45 mph streets...
This is true. Even if the street is marked "30" and drivers regularly do 40 - the 125 has no problems keepin' up.
I don't know if this is true where you are, but here:
If the speed limit is 25 or 30, then drive 35-40 mph
If the limit is 35, drive 40-45
.... basically just add 10 to the posted limit ...
This is one of the reasons I got a 125 - so I could keep up with traffic!

...the terrain here is mostly slight grades...
What is the GVWR of your scooter?
how many miles do you have on it?
My Yam dealer is getting one in ...in March...and I've got first dibs ...he wants my 2004 Zuma plus $1495... :yippy:

What is the GVWR of your scooter?
The book says 315lbs max - so no matter what, you should have no problem hauling around the Olsen Twins on a 125
how many miles do you have on it?

I am thinking about the same thing as larry, so here is my question:
what is the top speed of the Vino125?

I went to my yamaha dealer today... and checked out the vino 125... If the wife lets me... I want it....
anyway, with that being said, they have no idea how fast it goes... and will not allow test rides... So... it's buy it and see... which BLOWS!
however, IMO it's the style of the vino... with the advantages of the zuma (breaks and size) and the 4 stroke engine all in a nice package...

 ...are you kidding ???
Tell that dealer you're going to find someone who will treat you like a customer !!
My dealer let me ride the Zuma he had on the floor...as soon as the Vino 125 comes in, he'll prep it so I can ride it too...

Since I weigh a good 250, I''m looking at what size pre-teen i can have as a rider...
I don't remember my Zuma book saying anything about max. weight...
The GVWR is on the metal sticker on the bike.
I took the GVWR and subtracted the published weight of the bike...in the case of the Vino125...it's 229 lbs. That should give the capacity..

haha! Actually a lot of dealers won't allow their customers to ride the motorcycles...
any idea how much insurance would cost for them to do that...
My dealer charges MSRP or less depending on what the sales and such are.... no set up fee's and no delivery/shipping fee's....
So When the MSRP on the 125 vino is $2499, that's exactly what I'd pay plus licensing fee's...
which is nice as I've heard a lot of stories about zuma owners paying $23-2400 for a zuma... and I paid $1799 (msrp) plus the license and doc fee... Can't beat that...
larry-new
02-28-2005, 08:24 PM
...I dont theenk so!!
Let's face it, any dealer is not gonna keep the doors open on $1800 Zuma profits....
And why CAN'T they let you ride the bike?? god knows,, NY is about the highest insurance around...
...find another dealer...there's 4 in the Buffalo area alone, and another 4-5 in the outlying towns...

I live in anchorage alaska... the next closest dealer is in big something and it's like 5+ hour drive away...
and yes... my dealer charges MSRP... which is the manufacturer sug retail price... which means... that's what yamaha says it should sell for... they probable only make $100-150 on a zuma... you figure it's 10% or less... but when a dealer that sells MSRP over a mark up dealer... they sell 2 to 1 at least... so they sell more and make more in the long run....
Pure and simple... the reason I bought my zuma, was because the Anchorage Honda dealer wanted $1899 for a metro that's MSRP was $1699 and wanted to charge me set up and delivery fee's.... so it'd have been about $2000 or so for a year old scooter... plus license and doc fee's...
yamaha in town... wanted MSRP, plus the license and doc fee (I financed it)...
anyway, I understand about riding it... I think it makes since, but motorcycle dealers have to get additional insurance to cover "test rides" and since none of them in town do... I've got no hard feelings towards my yamaha dealer....

HOW FAST IS THE 125? TOP SPEED?
Don't really know. I've had it a little past 50, but I'm still a novice rider - I'm not really that comfortable pushing it way past 50 yet. But - from the feel of the bike at 50ish, it felt like there was still more top speed to be had.
Sorry I can't definitively answer the "How Fast" question.

Jones,
so, what is the rider weight?
i would guess with the rider weight 150, the Vino125 should almost make the 60ish, with the rider weight 250, would the vino125 able to make 55ish?
since you have the experience of the vino125, what do you think?

It'll probably do 60 in both cases - it'd just get to 60 faster with a 150 pound rider.

Jered... if money is the only consideration, you should get a Suzuki 250 Bandit. It's only $2999, LC and tops out at 105 mph. Pretty amazing if you ask me. ;)
Of course you would have to learn to shift a manual gear box... but I suspect you know how.
I understand the teenagers being here... but I have to ask why the older riders are here. Me? I fly jets. I've owned and ridden motorcycles that would make your eyeballs flatten.
I love going fast with a mouse-motor.
And yes... I did go 60 mph on my Vino!

I got mine cause my 4 year old could reach the stock foot pegs... which is what makes it legal for him to ride with me...
the 250 yamaha motorcycle... his feet would have gone in the spokes... and I really don't need that...
Now I like scooters... really don't need 100mph speeds... as I had a older 454LTD a few years ago... and went around there on that...
Anything over 70mph (highway speeds) would just get me into trouble!
I really like how the 125 vino looks... has the class but still looks cool... and beefy...
doubt the wife will allow it...
BTW: MORE DAMN SNOW TONIGHT! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I hate snow... I wish global warming would hurry up and get rid of the stuff... LOL!

the 125 vino... should and will go faster than a zuma... issos..jones says his did 50mph and had more throttle but didn't top it out yet...
if that is the case... it's already faster then the stock zuma...
larry-new
03-04-2005, 11:28 PM
Yeah, 50 IS faster than the 38 my Zuma will do !!!
...it's not the fast I need...it's the ability to go with the flow of traffic as a street changes from 30 to 35 to 40 to 45 and back...as some streets, which
WERE the way to go before the interstate loops circled the cities...but the old streets will still get you to the same place...often faster...
I've been exploring 950 mi. worth since mid Aug. '04 with the Zuma on these streets...but feel pressured on the faster...hell, even the 35mph streets !!
Safety on a scooter is being able to merge in the real-time-line of the traffic, without having the majority of vehicles experience me (on the scooter) as an impediment to how they want to drive. By real-time I mean that if I get into a sequence of, say 100 cars, numbered 1 to 100....say I merge in between cars #13 and #14...then if I am holding my own in traffic, in a mile or two I should still be in relatively the same place...
I'd be just as unsafe, of course, if I were the fastest thing on the road, instead of (one of )the slowest.
On a 4 lane street, I (and my scooter) should be able, when necessary, to move out of the curb lane to the middle lane without slowing others behind me ...because with the impatience in driving nowadays, it only takes about three seconds of this before a following car will attempt to pass by swerving into the adjacent lane.
I've been a student of traffic for many years... I can tell when a traffic light is about to change by looking at the accumulated knot of cars and where they are relative to the intersection...
Some cynic said about motorcycling that the reward for driving perfectly is the ability to go out the next day and do it all over again. He's right, of course, but in a negative sort of way... I don't let the possible danger of an open vehicle get me down....I feel good about being prepared, and every bit as armored as putting on a helmet. Every ride I take, there are always a few little things I could have done better...I try to note them as they happen and learn for tomorrow...

I've got a 125 and I weigh 260lbs. Real world top speed for me is 44-48mph, with 50-53mph achievable on flats. I've rarely gotten to sixty and above, but it wasn't easy. The short wheel base(not much longer than a Zuma) get's unstable in a hurry when you get up there. I've put nearly 3000 miles on mine, and I ride almost daily. It has a harsher ride than my motorcycle, in fact if you live in a town with a lot of pot holes, the Vino 125 will be manna from heaven for your local chiropractor. This is usually at speeds above 35 though. Day to day wise, I'd say that I spend at least half my time stuck behind someone in a slow car. The 125 has that much pep. In fact, I'd only consider going back to a Zuma if I modded it. I hated the top speeds of my Zuma, and the things that cagers would do to get around me. Bottom line for me is that if you're going to ride, you MUST be able to keep up with traffic. The 125 was fast enough that it led be to my first motorcycle purchase, but the 125 is so utterly practical for short trips that kept it, but I ride it everyday.
The 125 brings with it some things that the dealer won't tell you about. Every 2000miles, you must bring it in for servicing. This involves more than an oil change(I wish). They have to check the valves, and do some other stuff above my paygrade. This cost's about $70. Frankly I was pretty pissed off when I first learned this, since I fully intended to do that stuff myself. What can I say, I'm having to get used to that part of it.

Had to replace the rear one due to a slow leak. Cost $90 between the tire and labor. Other than the leak, I haven't felt that the OEM tires were all that bad. They certainly aren't the first things I would replace in the name of greater performance.

I'm all for doing stuff myself, but at the time I had no resources like this to use. The rear tire was only $35, it was mounting it that cost so much. They had to remove the exhaust to do it. The cost was actually $110, but when i balked at that, the manager quickly dropped it down. I was in disbelief that a scooter could cost so much. If it's possible to check the valves myself, I'd be happy to do my own 2000 mile servicings. I've already bought the oil and the drip pan. The 125 is kind of a rare bike, no info about it has been pretty hard to find. I have so far found no info about changing the rear tire in this site.
I see that LeoVince already makes a 4-stroke pipe. While it won't fit the 125, I see it as a good sign that the third party makers are starting to pay attention to the 125's and so on.

Well, I will try to make this short. Price of gas (driving factor to get a two wheeler)! I have a 98 Crown Vic, great car, very comfortable for trips, but in town a gas-guzzler. I needed to get something that will get me to and from work while staying with traffic (4.3 miles and 8 to 10 minutes depending on traffic). Started to look for a scooter (had a Suzuki 650 in the 80’s did not want to do that again), first looked at the Honda Elite 80 they did not have any in stock (gas is already at $2.15 a gallon) but had 20 ordered. Went to the Yamaha dealer to look at the Vino 125 they had a beautiful (new) red one in the showroom, $2499.00 and that was what he wanted, no haggling. He mentioned he had a used one next-door, looked at it fell in love, 2004 Silver with only 972 miles (really wanted the red for visibility). I said with a sigh “how much”, while holding my breath. “Well how does $1750. strike you,” he said, I said “don’t know till I ride it down the block and back”. Took it for the test ride, started up right away, ran like a deer, and I was hooked. I pulled up said “I’ll take it”, he wanted to change the oil, and look it over for me (still has about a month of the 12 month original warranty left) but I said its still used what can you do for warranty, he threw in a 90 day warranty. Paid for it, took it home the next day, and have now added about a hundred miles (rain every day for a week and temps in the 30’s and 40’s) but look forward to riding it every day. I am about 6’ and 230#; the top end for me has been about 50 to 53 straight and level (did it only once and not going that fast again). And that’s the story of how I bought my 2004 Silver Vino 125.

Thanks for the welcome Susan. I am from what I can tell one of many older citizens (mid 50’s) who are getting involved with the two wheel crowd (and don’t need the thrill of speed anymore). As I modify or change my 125 I will keep everyone updated. Sure wish they would publish an online repair manual for the 125. Would like to change the rear tire myself (hey what can I say, I’m cheap). The thought of $50 to $60 in labor to change a tire has me worried (not on Social Security) yet but getting there.

I've seen scooters with disk conversions... simply buy the parts on ebay and make a custom install...
I almost bought a front disk to work into my rear wheel... but didn't want to go there.... I think mine stops well as it is...
besides the "BUG EYE" my scooter looks awesome... and if I ever get a decent price on a different headlight... then I'll be good to go on modding that as well...

Yup - I have a 125 as well as a Vino 50 and a Zuma Sports Scoot. I guess I am nuts about the things. Big difference between the 125 and the 50!!! The 125 is actually a truly street capable cycle, whereas the 50 I would classify as a good looking toy. Any derestriction tricks on the 125 I should know about - I just got this thing. Taking it easy on the engine, but was up to 55 on it yesterday on a slight downhill slope. Seems to have plenty of power to weight. Nice throaty sound, too.

Isnt this the second year of production for the Vino 125??
I'd love to see Yamaha out the 125 in the Zuma. I'd be more than happy to pick that up.

Yup. :) Available in Deep Red and Arctic Silver. msrp of $2299, 2 hondo less than the '05 - other than that, I'm not sure at this time what (if any) the major differences are.

The vino 125 came out in 2005...
I didn't think there was a 2004 model for it...

I think they're identical except for the color...
the '05's come in "silver/onyx" and "maroon/onyx"

Some 2004 Vino 125 owners reported a problem with a crankcase seal leaking oil. Anyone know if Yamaha resolved this problem with the 2005?

My 125 had a slow oil leak that the dealer was never able to find. Eventually, it stopped by itself(a few months ago).

Hi everyone,
Got my Vino125 april 8th this year, so far i got 750km on it. I been riding it a lot, and loving a lot. Its perfect for the city and semi-urban areas. I ussually cruse at about 55-70 km/hr (Sorry US riders, dont know about those mph). It has enough balls to pass a slow going car, and to keep up with the fast traffic. I weight 240lbs (hehe i know the imperial weight though, lol) and the most i got out of it was 95km/hr on a slight downhill. On straightaways it will go 85km/hr full out. NOTE: I did high speeds after i broke it in a lil, after 600km travelled.
I am looking for any performance mods for this BEAST, but there is nothing on the market right now, that saddens me. I am planning to play with the CVBelt, see what happens. But I got a question myself, is there a restrictor on the clutch??? Remember this is a Canadian Model.
Thanks!

um... 85km/hr is only 52.82mph.... Um my zuma goes faster....
that sucks...
your down hill was 59.03mph...

as in ur stock zuma?

nope... as in my modded zuma... see my signiture!
I know we are compairing a stock 125 to a modded zuma 50... but still I was hoping that the Vino 125 would get to a strong highway speed....

nope...
it has PLENTY of mid-range power for a stock scoot, but it tops out rather quickly for my liking aswell. that is why i am in a mad search for any performance mods. plus my weight limits alot of the speed, i am not a light guy, plus i like to carry a bunch of stuff in my trunk space, and my GIVI box on the back....
BTW: If anyone knows... is there a restrictor on the exhaust of a vino125? or on the clutch(talking from ATV experience and the way they restrict kiddie ATVs with a spacer between the cluctch plates)?

75.4MPH on GPS.... ::Ov
No Fears- not as in ride like an idiot, as in will pull out in traffic, get in the fast lane with 0 issues and so on. I pass most cars when I am riding- just to see the faces. I think it is funny when cars get out of the "fast" lane into the "slow" lane when they see me at a light- only to see that I am quicker and faster than they are...
I was thinking the 125 should be able to do 70-75MPH all day long without stressing the motor?
Guess my 124cc Zuma really is a gem then- dude says it will cruise all day at 75MPH and it is only mildly tuned...

As a fellow XXL type...on a Zuma, no less...
I'd look at the easy mods...coating yourself with Moose Grease....{just kidding}, pumping up the tyres...I run mine at 36r, 32f. Better, bigger tyres, and lastly, a windscreen..(?!?)...something I'm thinking of for a kph or two....better aerodynamics...
Pay no attention to the exteeemely modded comparisons...they've got thousands in money and hundreds of hours trying to make a a pig into a porsche...whereas you are still under warranty...!
This site tends to be oriented around 2-stroke tuning, something that I'm not convinced is necessarily for me. I will probably graduate to a 4-stroke larger displacement before long.
I seem to have seen out there some sites that have items for 4-strokes, but NO SITE has the friendly and helpful blokes and chiques as this one...
Come next year, with the 2-stroke ban, things may change in a hurry...demand has a way of doing that. Until then, revel in your 52mph....wish I had it...just stay off the Queen E...

This site is about tuning 2 strokes simply because of the simple fact that you CAN NOT tune a 4 stroke.
2 strokes are as different from 4 strokes as a jet engine. But they are sooooo tunable.

Thats because this site is here to generate sales @ www.provoscooter.com and they ONLY advertise 2-stroke parts!!!
I also think its amusing how many different ways you can tell us you hate shifting! LOL
