ok, I got my stage one kit installed on my 04 vino. Got the crome technigas pipe, the athena speed variator, and the cluch springs.
currently, the bike is slower than it was with just the pipe on it.
the bike now has the rollers in it that came with the variator.. they are red. i also have the black rollers that came with the exhaust, and i have the roller tuning kit that i bought seperate from provo. does anyone have any idea where i should even start with this roller tuning thing? how do the weights affect performance? what weight should i start with? at this point i actually like the way the original transmission parts felt better than the current setup.. trying to feel justified in buying all this stuff!
thanks!

If you use heavy weights you will gain top speed and loose torque. lesser weight improves torque but over revs at a higher speed. so unless you are losing speed by over reving you will have to reduce the weight. When i did my upgrade i bought from 3 to 5 gram weights and tuned it by trial and error to my personal driving. If your weights are 2 heavy it will cause the vario to upshift faster so the motor won't be able to supply the rev's or the torque to acheive good speeds.
Hope that helps.
Tuning is an art...you need patience.
P.s Keep an eye on your plug colour.

Thanks Beany..
so why do i watch my plug and what am i looking for?
i just read in teh how tos that the aftermarket variators use different rollers than the stock ones. does that mean my roller tuning kit doesnt work with my athena speed variator?

well i have no clue on the aftermarket variators. i personally use my stock one with different weights...
as for the plug take a look at this=> http://provoscooter.com/wiki/doku.php?id=forum_articles:plug_read_guide
you don't want to run your motor lean (white colour)
as for weights mine have the weight written on them...check with the info that came with it it must say the colour-size somewhere. usually the pipe and weights go together but i like to adjust personally to my preferance.
full kit is the way to go for perfomance as everything works together...tuning scooters is actually cheap compared to alot of things. :0)

Vinonick, Freaky is right about tuning the scoot to your own feel. Everyone wants a different performance...faster take off or better top end speed. Rider weight has some affect but at this point I think your just trying to get it back to at least stock performance and then go from there.
I think you may need a stiffer torsion spring in the rear pulley. It's the single spring about 2" dia and about 6" long not compressed. It plays against the vari rollers upfront. When you rev up and get going the rollers and rear torsion spring are both trying to push the belt to the outer edge of each pulley. You typically should try a 1.5/white or 2K/yellow torsion spring. The pipe kit normally comes with a new torsion spring. Check the "how to" section to understand the change out...it can be a bear the first time as the clutch nut is under a lot of spring tension and makes for fun getting it back together. Best to have someone get the nut threaded back on as you compress things back together.

Thanks fellas. I got decided to start with the 5 gram rollers and the bike is much faster than stock. I definitely just had the wrong rollers in. so now i just have to keep trying different weights until i find one i really like.
go go, i actually have the torsion spring that came with the variator installed, along with stiffer clutch springs. it was definitely just the wrong rollers.
so this should last me for a while..
well, im definitely gonna paint my rims and get whitewalls.. mebbe a new shock.
after that is the 70cc kit and carb.. :-)

Im sure you figured this out, but just thought i would mention this for others reading this.
Most pipes come with a set of rollers that are "tuned" for the new pipe. That is according to the exhaust manufacturer. The problem is that those rollers are for the stock variator (15x12mm in most cases) The aftermarket variators (athena speed, and Malossi Multivar) use a 16x13mm roller. The roller tuning kit Provoscooter sells is 16x13mm for the aftermarket variators. perhaps in the future if people express an interest we will start to carry the tuning kit in the stock size.
