View Full Version : Perpetual Scooters on TV thread

Hey guys, ever watch American Choppers??? Well if you've seen the 2nd episode where they build Will Smith's I,Robot bike, Vinnie, Paul Jr. and Mikey all buy scooters! Pauly rides a blue Zuma, Vinnie a red one, and Mikey rides a Vino. It's hillarious watching 200+ lb guys riding these things on the street. They ride wheelies with them and have a blast, it's quite ammusing. On a following few eppisodes when they work on the "Police" bike, Vinnie puts a 70CC kit on Mikey's Vino and upgrades the exhaust without Mikey knowing. So when Mikey had to run to the store Vinnie said "take your scooter!" So Mikey hopped on and the thing wheelied out of the shop, scaring the hell out of him. Very funny ****... and who'dve thought that guys making thousands of dollars building multi-million dollar bikes have more fun with Yamaha scoots!

That reminds me, anyone seen Mikey (for those of you who know his screen name which I will not post by his request) on here lately? I bet with all the newbies on the board that a lot of them didn't know all the hop up parts they bought for their Yammy's came from Provoscooter. Erich walked Paulie through installs on the phone.

No way, that's awesome. Did they join the board?

Mikey's awesome. Love that guy. For a while I had been toying around with the idea of buying a scooter, but I would only browse the dealers and look up stuff online. Then I saw Mikey rockin' a vino on that 'I,Robot' episode, and well.... it looked wicked fun. So I ordered my 125 the next day. So I guess I have Mikey to thank for helping me decide to get into scoots. :)

well, Erich had to walk them throught the install? That just proves that they are BIKE ASSEMBLERS! I too love the show, but, knowing that they needed help with a stage two kinda takes the wind out my sail........

I think they should have put provoscooter stickers on the scoots...

Help a fellow out with some exposure and Elrich might get rich (when you do remember us little folks or at least send me an already staged III Zuma since it was my idea!)

Easy now, everybody needs help on their first time. All that proves is that they are more specialized than you think. By your logic, you being a custom home builder, you must be just another contractor unless you can build a pool all by yourself without someone showing you how the first time.

DannyMoped07
10-28-2004, 07:55 PM
everyone needs a place to start. Afterall, I know my way around a metal shop and a welder, but that doesnt make me qualified to wort at OCC. Kinda the same idea, you dont wanna rip into your vino or zuma without consulting a pro.

Lennox
10-28-2004, 08:36 PM
There is a HUGE difference between asking a pro for a few "helpful" hints, and being "walked" through over the phone..... now maybe King Streched the truth a bit? I don't know the facts....

BUT.... if a walking through was nessesary, then that is sad!!!

bite your tongue all you want but if you really do love OCC than you should acknowledge all the fabrication and skill envolved in what they do. You calling them BIKE ASSEMBLERS is like me calling you an apprentice in your field. We both know that it takes more than just a BIKE ASSEMBLER to build bikes like the Jet Bike or the Black Widow Bike etc., just as it takes more than just a lumberjack to build custom homes. You can trash OCC all you want but you'll never convince me that they are anything less than skilled craftsmen.

DannyMoped07
10-28-2004, 10:36 PM
I figured it out!!! ScooterConvert is Mikey!!!! lol, Jk. I totally agree with you though.

My name IS Mike but I'm not the one you're thinking of! By the way...Mikey Rules! :D

Davey-boi
10-29-2004, 01:58 AM
Muahahaha! Thats the funniest stuff I've ever heard! All the guys at the OCC do is take the same exact parts (engine, fenders, gas tank), chop a lil hear, snip a lil there, spray some paint, and presty a custom chopper. Basically they've built the same exact bike, just making it look different.

You wanna see craftsmen... you wanna see artists? Take a look at some if Chica's, Billy Lane, or Russell's bikes. OCC has nothing on them.
I hoped I convinced you that they are simply assemblers :D .

DannyMoped07
10-29-2004, 08:18 AM
OK, there I agree with you. Chica is INSANE his Unicorn bike was probably the hottest bike I've seen. However, Billy Lane's bike with the open rear wheel was probably the coolest invention ever... if there were a way to combine the two... DAMN.

Kinda sucks though.... You gotta admit that finding out OCC doesn't fabricate their bikes is kinda like finding out Micky Mantel corked his bat.

scooterconvert
10-29-2004, 10:37 AM
I'm not arguing about comparing them to other bike builders, I'm arguing about all you out there who call them bike assemblers. The way fabrication works is you spend all this time figuring out how to do it, then you figure out better ways to do it and faster ways. OCC is past that point now and they're in the production stage. That's how you make money and that's how you get better at what you do. If you think it's so easy to build a custom chopper than do it yourself. I build kit cars and I used to think like you.."all you have to do is put it together and you've got a car" but after experiencing it for the past year and a half I can tell you that no two are the same, each one is a different challenge. You've gotta know your stuff. That's how I know what OCC is going through. Sure there are other builders out there that can build nicer or better bikes, but that doesn't mean OCC are just bike assemblers.

Lennox
10-29-2004, 11:02 AM
:p this is me biting my tounge..........still!

scooterconvert
10-29-2004, 11:14 AM
:p this is me saying let's hear it!

Davey-boi
10-29-2004, 12:56 PM
I dunno man, I just can't see them as anything more than assemblers. When you buy a kit, everythings right there for you. Sure, some stuff won't fit perfect and will need a lil modification, but thats expected. All Paulie really does is weld lil details on and calls it a theme bike. And when you see guys designing their own wheels, fabricating thier own gas tanks and fenders... it's hard to see the OCC boys as real custom bike biulders.

scooterconvert
10-29-2004, 01:15 PM
It's all about picking and choosing your battles. I've seen them do their own tanks, handlebars, fenders, you name it. But now that they have such demand for their bikes they will actually make more money if they outsource that stuff and focus on finishing the bike. They could spend 6 weeks making every single little thing on the bike or they can outsource it and get the bike done in 2 weeks and finish three bikes in the time they could take to do one. You do the math..what would you do? I guess my main point in this whole thing is that calling them bike assemblers implies that you could throw any welder into their situation and get just as good a bike but you can't..I've tried it, I've lost money, and I've learned that you have to know what your doing to do any kind of custom work or design. I've been watching OCC from the beginning and I've seen their skills.

XPS1210
10-29-2004, 01:36 PM
Hey, lets get off the OCC part of the thread...

Some see them as chopper builders

Some as bike assemblers...

Which ever you see them as... Lets leave it be...

I see this thread going south quickly with the way it's going... Please get back to the idea of scooter on TV shows... Or it'll have to be closed to further discussion....

Not trying to be mean... but don't want it to get nasty... and it's creaping toward that happening!

Thanks guys! :)

I have noticed recently that there are more shows with scooters in them. I was just watching Scrubs and there was a blue Vino driving down the road. On American Chopper I saw the episode where they had the Vino and the two Zumas. I am really impressed with how many scooters there are on TV now.
