We all have our own style of clothing we wear when we scoot, whether it to fit in to a certain clique, or club or to meet our own standards. Whether you wear Ben Sherman, or SX Apparel, we all wear clothes, well except for those nudist freak, and the while previous clothing brands live through the Mod era, one other form of clothing endeared the scootering scene, both here and abroad in the UK, and that was military surplus clothing.
I started wearing mil-spec clothing when I started working as a Photojournalist in the early 90's, not as any form of fashion sense, but because it was functional for a photog in the field. Later when I got in to scootering hard again, I discovered both the Mods and the US hippies who rode scooters during the scene, and later in the 70's scooterboy era that mil clothing was fashionable.
Today, military BDU's are an affordable, comfortable and functional way to dress while out and about on your scooter. Easy to clean and durable as hell, BDU's parkas and other military attire can make for a pleasant and comfortable ride any day. Best of all mil clothing either new, or used is affordable. Today's military BDUs come in many different colors and patterns and can be bought at surplus stores, and even camping supply stores.
And for the brave who want to spend a lot of time out and about cruising on a tour, try an ALICE pack, (All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment) available in three sizes. I recommend either the small or medium available in both ballistic nylon or canvas (I have a medium canvas one myself!) The large ALICE pack is mounted to an external frame not really suited for extended riding! I am often seen on my Vino with my black BDU 4 pocket shirt with subdued US Flag patch on both arms, and my black canvas ALICE pack on. A true value for the scooterist who wants to ride in comfort and style.
