YIPPPEEEEE!!!!!!
I was driving my truck down the road this evening and guess what...
I see a scooter on the back of this dudes truck with "NOS" stickers and all kinds of other things on it. I follow him in to this shopping center about 2 blocks from where I 1st saw him. When he parks I pull up, tell him I have a 04 Zuma and looking to get some work done. He tells me about "HP Mopeds" in Northern VA. and that they ROCK!

NICE NICE NICE
Looks like pretty soon I won't be known as "Loser Mark with the STOCK Zuma" and will be known as "Loser Mark with the mod'ed Zuma"
HAHHAHAHHHAHHAHA
This is going to be AWESOME!!!!

Sent him an email last night- let you know what he says.

Back to being a loser....
They said they don't touch Yamaha's...
They have to buy parts at retail and don't make any $$ on them.
I asked if I could bring them the parts and they said nope...

Don't worry the Zuma doesn't like to be modded anyway... I'm getting a vino in the spring... Then I can hit 60mph... I'll put the zuma back stock and call it quits...
Thats as long as the wife lets me...

Hmm...
I am 1st in line for the yard sale if you don't keep you stuff for the Vino.
I am not looking to go super fast- just a tad bit faster would be nice.
I ride with 7 Honda Metro's (soon to be 8 I heard) so I am already backing off the throttle 1/2 the day anyway. I think a stage 1 would do me fine but since it is soooo hard to find someone to tune my bike I am going to go stage II I think. Then again that means if it breaks which it might sooner with a II vs. I I am screwed and so on.. who knows...
Just nice to get a little more out of it is all- not going to go full bore. I can fly down some pretty steep and long hills as it is and am not a huge fan of it- it is still fun but I would prefer to have something more stable if I am going to get up to those speeds.

actually I'm thinking and hoping that some if not most of the parts can be crossed over to the vino... Can't imagine the cylinder, carb and variator would be different... maybe the exhaust... Most everything else should fit...

why doesn't Zuma like it???

08-19-2004, 03:22 PM
well you see my list of mods... I have yet to get a solid spped over 48mph... No it's not a major tuning issue... Everywhere I can find except a rare few can't get the zuma over 50mph... A few dealers swear they can get the 55mph on flat road... And a few people... One guy on the yahoo zuma forum and one on eBay swear they have gone 80MPH and 62 repectively...
I don't buy it as they were both less modded than mine... I can't get over 48...
With the same mods as mine a VINO will cruz at over 55mph... MAybe even over 60mph...
So the Zuma doesn't like the speed mods... In fact Acceleration is better but not able to pop a wheelie like I was expecting...
I have to do major lifting to even get the wheel off the ground....
Once I get my jet (main jet for carb) in, I plan on doing a major recheck of everything to make sure it's at it's best possible tune... However without the CDI and upgear I'm not expecting much more than a mile or two more...

well with the scooter topping at 42ish stock... 48 isn't that impressive... my hopes and expectations were 60 with what is already installed... and more with the upgears...
now, no i'm not planning on doing 60 plus on a regular basis... however i'd like to be able to say i can do it and proove it as well...
if nothing more that to be able, if i wish to take a 30 second trip on the highway to get home instead of the ghetto back route...

Hahaha, my vino goes 47-50mph with only stage 1!!! I'm just givin you a hard time dude. But what I really wanted to say is you really don't wanna go much faster than that on these scoots. But lemme tell you, having that extra power in ur hands is a whole lotta fun!
XPS1210
08-20-2004, 02:40 AM
exactly my point... I don't need or want to go over 60mph but to be able to say I can... Be able to prove it to the jerky in the honda who says I can't and just to be able to if I want to...
You know...
I did read something about the upgear kits... And can't wait to get mine... Hopefully soon... The way they are cut it reduces friction and allowes a MUCH better "FREE SPIN" on the rear wheel... Almost eliminates the friction loss...
In addition to adding the different gear ratios... I can't wait... Hopefully 60 here I come...

I would LOVE to go 60mph....
I know to be reliable leave it stock...
The further you get from stock in theroy the less reliable it will be.
So..
I want more speed/quickness than stock but don't want to go full race and need a rebuild every 500 miles.
I want to be able to go 80 if I could just to do it and be able to do it even if I never go over 35 BUT.... I don't have the time/want to learn/feel like dealing with it/and on and on and on about working on scooters- that means every time I call my mechanic (if I can find one..) it is going to cost me $$$$.
That being said, being able to go 80MPH would be awesome- paying to get my bike worked on every 2.5 months would not be.

I'd like to go over 60 too, but no way in hell on a Vino (or Zuma for that matter)
marylandmark
08-20-2004, 10:23 AM
It is not that I would go over 60- just knowing and saying I can if I wanted to.
Have to be able to brag a little when people say:
"Is it fast?" and that junk
my helmet has a sticker on it "Yes it is fast and no you can't ride it"

I'm hoping the different style reed valves made a difference... Even with the jacked main jet, it felt stronger...
I litterally couldn't get on and ride as it would bog out and after installing the different CF reed valves... I actually took a spin around the block... and the rear wheel spun with very little effort... compaired to bogging before the install...

Guys,
A buddy just got a pair of brand new Zumas and me and my 13 yr old have been borrowing them. We like them enough I decided to crowse the web and find out opinions on them versus other sporting scoots.
I found this website and started looking around.
Then I found this thread...
Here's the skinny. I'm a longtime MX racer, machinist, tuner, outboard boat drag racer, etc, now turned fat old gray headed guy.
Buddy's stock 11 mile on the odometer Zumas will run 36 with my fat butt on dead level ground with not much runup. I bet 38 is not far away with some room.
The motor sounds like about 6500 revs (just an "ear" guess) is where it's running on accel, and maybe 7200 ish on top (I have no tach, like I said just an ear guess). There's NO reason to not expect to be able to find DOUBLE the horsepower in this motor with a pipe, larger carb, some cylinder porting, and additional revs.
38 stock to 60 plus modded should not be a difficult issue. The tone of this thread is that it is an impossibility. I fail to see the problem.
I am NOT saying that the combos that you guys are using should run 60, as I have no idea of the stock porting config, etc.. But I AM saying that after riding two stock Zumas, that the torque curve, rev range, and small carb ALL tell me what I need to know to say that there is no reason that this package can't run 60 with proper mods.
Port timing will definitely need changed, and this will result in a loss of low end torque, but if the clutch/converter is retuned to hold a different rpm during shifting then you'll only have to deal with either a soft takeoff or a high rev takeoff (your choice depending on the engagement point of the clutch). From then on, it'll be strong (but will be louder for sure, and at a higher rpm).
If I end up buying a Zuma, then I'll have definitely more specific details than just empty words..

I don't know what to tell you, I thought with the parts I have installed I should be pushing 60ish... however I can't get over 48... I'm working on it still with tuning and stuff but can't do anything till I get my jet... Hopefully by wed this week...
Keep up on this site as MArk, myself and the few other zuma guys get them rolling faster and faster...

Well... I am going to hit it hard once the upgear kit get in stock at provo... As soon as he finally gets them instock...
And with a little more tuning... I'm gonna give it a running try anyway...
I went in and added just my speed parts... I have $795.00 in go faster parts ordered...
I ordered a couple of extra roller sets, spart plugs, scooter cover, brake pads and shoes... So those don't really count for the money spend on going faster... Sorry I didn't figure an exact dollar amount yet... This doesn't include the price for the CDI yet... Erich doesn't have a good price on them yet... I have noticed there are 2 types of replacement CDI's one that just increases the revs a little and one thatr has no rev limiter at all...
Moped hospital has both in stock but I'm waiting to see what Provo has in the works before I get to into working with the hospital.

I can honestly say 70 on a zuma would be scary...
Anyone know what the factory rubber is rated speed wise?
I can't find any info on it in the manual or in forums...
I hope thay are safe to run at 60? I'd hate to smear due to tire failure!
I guess I'm gonna be buying some rubber from provo in the not to distant future as well...

AS well when looking through that list or the mail list of threads you can click on the "CHECK MARK" and it will bring you to the newest post on that thread to eliminate having to scroll through 3 or 4 pages to get to the new posts...

Without a Zuma motor mocked up with a degree wheel, I have no way to know what the current port timing is. I could do a port cleanup and square out the edges and raise the exhaust port some, but without a degree map of the current setup I'd just be guessing. Sometimes the piston skirt needs modified a bit, too..
As far as a 70 mph Zuma being scary, I don't know why you say that. We modded Honda Z50's for years. Not only did we have a stroker motor Z50 that would run 70, but we had two RM80 motored Z50's that would run over 80 with stock steering geometry and spring plunger forks (one was a hardtail and one was a custom rising rate monoshock). Sure, they steered dang quick, but that just made them fun, not scary. The Zuma has very conservative steering geometry, almost slow geometry, that would make it like a Caddy. They also have modern oil damped suspensions.
And tires? Speed ratings? I dunno what the official rating is on a Zuma tire, but we ran wheelbarrow tires on the Z50's. They had a good round profile and gummy rubber. They didn't last long when knee dragging, but they never popped on top end (which would have been nasty).
From my limited time on a Zuma, I was impressed with the chassis rigidity (I weigh 225) and the suspension and geometry. I think it is a good base.
