I like the looks of that style scooter... however I'm not sure if they are considered 50cc motorcycles or 50cc scooters? WTH... I donno?!?!

Then again with the 06 2 stroke ban? maybe this is the future of scooters... going to a small---- small motorcycle...

Lennox..The english site had it in the 50cc category..But I didnt see anything about them changing the 2-stroke piggy to a 4.....I like the front end..But WHAT!! NO FOOTPAD!!..This is the largest (and only) photo I could find..But It does have a full swingarm.... Hmm..Smells like a 4-stroke :p

I got to admit, I really kinda like it. Regrettably it no longer counts as a scooter since the first rule of scootering is that it must have a walk through frame. o_o

Why does the Derbi website still show the older body style?

actually that isnt updated...but I also got confused when I did a canadian search for Imported models of scooters..they have another model of GP-1...Derbi isnt the only one who does this... yamaha will sell the same scooter under a different name also...sorry this picture is hiding the name...V-2.. GP-1

that is one bad lookin ride... but for that much money you can buy a used motorcycle with over 100hp... 5 grand is so much for a little scooter....

You are totally correct...I think they are going after the Guy/Girl who HAS to have something different...

Aviatrixie
03-11-2005, 04:48 PM
But I simply do not understand what is different about it. It looks like a crotch-rocket but is a 50cc bike.

Does this mean that the new GP-1 is to a GSXR as a tiny pocket rocket is to a new GP-1? Five grand can buy a pretty decent motorcycle, after all.

Erika..I dont think it's gonna fly here..I think they are taking a chance...As usual..the euro Community thinks we only want retro-look scooters here...no big money sales..I admit we arent european...These Kids in Europe cant afford Honda civic drag racers..Or HUGE suvs....Or Hyabusas for that matter....so they save for an Aerox and HEBO the heck out of it..its quite a different scene..as we can see from some of these videos..I just wish some of the true American Sport scooter lovers could possibly Import The Scooter they fell in Love with....Oh Well "To Dream the Impossible Dream".....Oh! I also cant understand the 50cc Cafe Racer replicas??!!??...Uh..wouldnt someone start with a 250cc??? .... John

John...

I've been having this conversation with a gentlman friend in Holland... sent him a link to a Dutch scootertuning site, just trying to understand. It seems licensing is much tighter in Europe. So kids (anyone under 18) are really wrapped up in the whole sub-50cc thing. Het Scootertuning was the site.

It's a lot tougher to get a driver's licence in Europe. I think it's about to get tougher here, from what I've been reading.

Anyway, Eric tells me the kids on 49cc bikes are a pain in Europe.

and... they don't play with modded scooters...

they just take them if they get caught... Seen lots of video's of them being loaded up on flat bed trucks... and litterally 20+ scooters all strapped down...

Jered,

The way Eric describes it, they have a real problem in Europe. At 15 or 16 they can get a moped licence. The age to drive a car is 18 to 21. So they have a bunch of kids on 49cc scoots trying to go faster than 29 mph.

From what I've been reading in the newspapers lately there's a push to raise the driving age in the USA as well.

I think they are cool but want to check them out more. Very agressive styling for a scooter so the power has to match or you will come off looking like a dork in my opinion.

For the money you can get a "motorcycle" that will dust this thing.

I want to stick with having a "scooter", not a "motorcycle".

Sorry mark..Didn't mean to be so direct. They aren't really a scooter except for the motor. I forgot to mention the fine engineering. Yea..I would rather have a gixxer...but I need to stay alive. John

damn these are beautiful bikes. i want one so bad. problem is spending that kind of money on one you can get an almost new sv650 (the bike i want) decisions decisions. these are definatly better looking in my opinion.

LOL- I re-read my post and saw how it came off- that was NOT what I intended!!! :ulp

I was saying if I or anyone else wanted a "motorcycle" then we would be looking at "motorcycles", not a "scooter". I want a "scooter", not a "motorcycle" o_o

The other thing is cost- for that price you can get a lot of "motorcycle"...

Sorry bro - some times hard to convey what I am really saying on the net as every one reads things different...

yea if i wanted to drop 3k i would just get like a used 600ninja for that kinda money. derbi is always sooooo expensive with their bikes.

Yups- can get a much better performing "bike" for what these puppies are going to cost. With such a sporty look it is going to take a LOT of performace to not look like an idiot (remember the Ninja 250 that used to get beat off the line by and have a lower top end than a Honda Accord?)

The 150cc Boulevard's are $3,700- add in that it is H20 cooled, 100 more cc's and a new design. The estimation at this time is $4995.00 MSRP for the 250cc GP-1....

22 HP @ 6500RPM at about 400LBS is what the stocker is putting out- for that price you can get a used R6 that weights the same with 123HP..

yea i dont think derbi was thinking again.

I think Derbi are just ahead of the game here. ALL euro scoots are getting more expensive. Here in BC, the Vespa ET2 goes for 4300, the Aprillia SR50 for 43-4600, so the Derbi is just a little more at 5000. Of course, these all come fully rerestricted, and the V3 GP1 should do 60 straight out of the box. If they could drop the price a couple hundred, I think they will clean up... thats assuming they can pass it off as a scooter with Transport Canada, and get it to dealers! It is quite a bit for a scoot, granted, but if you want a good ride, and don't want to bother with a MC license... there ya go. In my oppinion, its no longer really a scooter, but I will sure as heck be out at the dealer trying one out when they get here! o_o

heck i love the bike personally..if it accelerated like a croutch rocket and did 75 i would pay for one but at that price theres no way in heck that i would...spend another 1k and get a 500cc bike from honda or someone like that and do like 100+ mph if you wanted to...
