hello, I'm a noob.
after installing a S1 uprade purchased from Provo, I have no power at takeoff. There was a lot of looseness in the outer Variator pulley face when first installed, an email from Provo told me to use a washer to take up the slack, still no power, I'm using the lightest weight rollers i can find, 4 g. Malossi. I've had to put my stock var. back in just to be able to get around. the pipe and clutch kit are a nice improvement over stock, but i want to get this var. working, any hints?

did you install the rear torque spring?
As well as the clutch springs?
and have you adjusted the weights at all?
Last thing I'd check is the clutch bell.... make sure it's not locked on the clutch... this can happen and make the rear wheel be locked with the RPM's and not even start...

it works fine with the new clutch springs and pipe, sorry about the double posting. It does not go at all with the new variator, I tried all the different weights. I have to push start it up to 5 mph, then it barely goes until 15-17 mph. then it pulls .

are the variator tabs on the back cut?
If not then you can CUT 1/2 of them off... that way the belt rides lower in the variator...
There is a how to on the main page of the www.provoscooter.com site... Called Technomoto variator mod.
I did it on mine but cut to much off as I cut the tabs all the way off...
I can't imagine that with the lowest rollers it is still giving you such problems as they are pretty light...
Did you install the variator correctly? Washer then the variator (back plate, rollers, then variator) with the pin roller installed in the variator... then the belt and then the finned pulley half... followed by the kickstart gear, large washer and nut...
Anyway, other than that... I'm at a loss... I never did stage 1 I jumped straight to stage 3... So it wasn't a big deal for me...

Well one time i installed a technomoto variator on my scoot and it would not get off the line. It would be sluggish sounding like there was something wrong with the engine but i realized that i had tightend the variator fan against the belt. The belt was squished between the variator and the variator fan. Try using another washer like erich said or when you are tightning the variator nut, push the belt inward in the back pully so the belt is loose and can not be squished in the front pully. Then when you start your scoot the belt should return to its regular postion.

do you mean the thin spacer that came with the variator goes behind the var.? I put it together the way the stock one came off, spacer on after the large bushing, then outer pulley and such, I got the new var. to work by putting the large flat washer recomended to me by Erich in front of the outer pulley, making the effective pully width wider. I'll try putting it together your way, thin spacer, variator, bushing, outer pulley half, then large washer and starter gear. As it is now, I'm worse off than before I started, lag on takeoff, wind is a major factor in my speed, and lower top speed. Is it possible I have the wrong part?

I really don't want to start grinding on parts I might need to return (I might have a problem getting a refund on modified parts) I'll try your install order first. then try the grinding on my stock variator first, if that fails.

Do you have the tecnomoto one? There is a picture in the install instructions that show how to install the variator... in fact I believe there is supposed to be 2 washers on the technomoto one... but can't remember for sure...
I'll try and look up the directions on it tonight... and see if I can find the install info...

I only got one in the kit. the blown up view was less than helpful. the instructions with the pipe were clear and easily understood. Yes, it is Tecnomoto Ref. 1266. TNG is the part no.

Many, Many thanks, Jered. following your install order, washer, variator, bushing, spacer, outer pully assy. I got back up to 40 mph, a little sluggish on takeoff to 5 mph. then ramps up to 40 real quick!!!! Stage 2 upgrade will happen soon.
