I'm about to purchase a 2007 "Fly 50" 4-stroke. The only bad thing I've heard about its the slow acceleration rate, but I think that's normal for a 4-stroke, isn't it?
Anything else?

yup it is extremely slow not only in acceleration but on top speed too. On the good side, it does do well to mods and a 70cc kit will work on this

so, is it a 4stroke, or 2 stroke?

The new ones are 4T's and the 2007 model the op is referring to is a 4T.
Terrible top end speed. Went on a group ride with one last year and the rider was holding up traffic. Man, it was painful :( We were wondering if he was breaking in the engine by not going WOT on it, but apparently that wasn't the case. He was pinning the throttle just to keep up, if at that.
the owner of that 4T eventually put a 70 cc kit on it and it did much better, from what I've been told (80+ kph)

From My experience, the 4 stroke 50cc are very weak engines. they are nothing like their 2 stroke brothers.
I worked on, fixed and PDI'd fly50/lx50 and I can tell you, they are slooooow. even when in city traffic, pulling off a red light is nasty and cars behind you get upset. I seriously wonder if they make them just to make money. because everyone I know who ends up buying them do it becuase it is the cheapest scoot and they feel like they can live with the speed. they can't, and end up buying a bigger bike a few months down the road, so the dealer makes two sales off the same customer.

try looking for the Derbi Atlantis. Still from the Piaggio line up, but it is a 2T and acceleration and top speed is very good.

We were first looking at a Yamaha BWs, but we were advised to go for a 4T because of the noise, pollution and maintenance. Perhaps it's not worth it? I suppose the noise could at least be reduced by changing the exhaust pipe?
Our store has the Derbi Bullet, but it's $400 more.

Don't worry about pollution. The new 2T's that are being sold in Canada are now compliant with gov't emmision standards. Noise is actually a good thing when it comes to scooters. In addition to being seen, you want to be heard on the road.
2T maintenance is really quite simple actually.
In any event, don't get a scooter if it is too slow and does not meet your list of requirements.

You Can't go wrong with the BWs, is it an 06 or an 08?
If it's an 06, your in luck, as for 08 they put a bunch of restrictions on it for emissions, and wound up turning it into a snail... You can always de-restrict them though... :)
The Derbi Bullet is another good one, slightly faster than a BW, thanks to a 17.5mm carb stock.
My suggestion: Ride as may as possible! That way you can find the one that's right for you, easier.

you should have gotten a piaggio typhoon. they take to mods really good. i have the cheapest MK bore kit and cheapest leo pipe and i get 60 to 65mph top speed out of it. the tranny is all stock.

It's a 2006 for $2,400 CAD.
I'm also in contact with a guy who owns a "Fly 50" (the poster of the boring video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqlTh6iUHMs). He says he goes 65 Km/h with it on flat land. That doesn't sound like a "slowwwwwww" scooter to me, but he does agree on the very slow acceleration rate.
*sigh* it's complicated when you have no experience with scooters. Thank god I've found this site!

.
The Derbi Atlantis and the Derbi Bullet is essentially the same bike. Mine is called the Derbi Atlantis Bullet :)
As for the Typhoon, brand new, they are as slow as the Fly 50, but once broken in, they are mad fast, like the Derbi.

I just came back from the dealer and bought my very first scooter!
It's a blue 2006 BWs for $2,800 CAD (all included) with a coupon for $150 worth of accessories. I think it's a good deal... isn't it?
It'll be ready next thursday.
Many thanks for all your input guys. You were a lot of help.

Congratulations! You got yourself a good bike! Know what accessories your gonna get?
First mod I ever made to mine was the Yamaha Rally Kit... I even painted it to match the bike!
That's about what I paid for my 06, back in... 06. Didn't get any free stuff though...

I'm gonna get a $109 helmet and with the remaining $30 I'll... I'll... oh heck, what can $30 get me? :(

So it's not a good deal then. The 2008 was $300 more and the dealer was ready to remove whatever is reducing the performance of it (the anti-pollution thingy). Still, paying $300 more to have an exact copy of the 2006 wouldn't have been a wise move.

i dont know how fast my typhoon would have been if i waited for the brake in, it was just too slow. at 50 miles on the bike i put the bore kit and pipe and 55 to 65mph is a lot better then the 35 i was getting.

How is acceleration compared to (fill in the blank with your scoot experience) after the bore kit with the Fly 50? I am thinking about buying the cam and bore kit.
Thanks
