Along with some of the other (old) posts i've seen of this site, I wanted to add that aside from getting an M1 endorsement on your license (if you do an MSF course, you can do it on a scooter - if they have one or you bring your own) and having to register it as a motorcycle (technically two-wheeled motorized vehicle), the scooter has to be "verified." That means checking the VIN, the Engine number, and the emissions sticker. The VIN is easy enough, but the latter two are a pain. The DMV guy didn't know where they were on the vino (mine's a 2004 vino 125, but i imagine it's much the same way since the body is more similar than not on newer models). The Engine number can be seen on the left hand side, attached to the black "Yamaha" case, etched into the transparent/white plastic there (like the VIN frame). The color/placement renders the number virtually INVISIBLE. The emissions sticker is...on the inside side panel, which you can look at from the other side, if you look for it with a flash light. Those of you who bought yours from a dealer, or a CA owner who had either a dealer deal with all this or had done it him/herself, count your lucky stars. As a first-time scooter person, the DMV was a bit more complicated than I originally thought. Just trying to pass on some findings.
