I have a 1999 Zuma, lately the electric starter has been making a grinding sound when the button is pushed. When cold it usually will not start with the electric starter but when warm it will, it always starts on the first kick. My question is does anyone have an idea where I should look first, I am pretty sure it is one of the gears behind the Variator but I thought I would just ask and maybe someone has had the same problem.

the best way to go is to just take out the complete starter gear and use only the kicker. the starter gear on yamaha scooters only hold back the motor and rob some h.p. oh yeah when you put bore kits on zumas they dont like cold starts. they only start when warm, so whats the use.

It has started just fine with the 70 kit for over a year, I just want to fix the starter problem. I will open it up this weekend and look at it. Maybe I will take the pieces out and see if it is faster....

would have to be a bad gear or starter sticking.

the only bad thing about not having the electric start is that the center stand (on 02 and newer) needs to be down to kick start it...
So what happens if you stall while waiting at a light? You have to get off and then put it on the stand....
What a pain in the butt!
I'm gonna make a side stand as no one seams to sell them anymore! and might remove the starter then...

yeah i removed the electric starter on my razz took some weight off the crank with the whole system removed. I like kickstarting mine starts atleast on the 2nd kick every time thats when its cold.
