I figured with the instructions and the ease of the Stage 1 mods, this would be okay to do on my own. Boy, was i wrong.
The Piston and head went in fine, ditto for the reed valves.
The carb. Arggh.
First we couldn't find a slim enough bike cable to fit through the new carb! The Yamaha dealer said it would cost $86 to get one from them!
Ended up having to take it to a motorcycle shop so they could cut cable from a spool... $25. Seems okay?!?
The bike starts (yippee!), keeps stalling but runs, BUT then we notice the headlight isn't on! All the other lights are working: taillight, turn signal, oil light, gauge lights.
Now, I'm getting mad... we decide to take it to a proper mechanic. We've had enough. He starts with the carb and it still won't hold an idle with a brake on, keeps stalling. A cable is loose ( at this point, I just want it to run)
he fixes it. He gets an idle!
The headlight gets "shorted" somehow by the auto choke (the plug w/ the needle). When he unplugged it, the headlight came on!
He said I would have trouble starting it "cold".
I did! I tried to electric start it but the battery would drain after 3 tries!
I tried kickstarting it and the engine wouldn't turn over!
Arggh!!

Can anybody tell me what is wrong!?!? The instructions say not to worry about how the auto choke is soldered to the stock auto choke wires, but is this really true?!? Why won't my bike start?!!?

Thanks,
Evelyn

lets see......... what air filter/box are you using?

I used the airbox that came with the kit.
The spongey, cylinder shaped one.

Do you think the wires on the auto choke could be soldered wrong?

the wires do not matter.... but, just in case try it with no wires....

the auto choke will not and should not cause the headlights to be goofy unless there is something installed wrong...

are you 100% sure that you installed the choke to the stock wires for the auto choke? It shouldn't make a difference which wire goes to which wire on the choke or the bike's (stock choke wires)...

with that being said... If you can't get it to work for you there are 2 options... One get with erich at provo about getting a Manual choke.... They cost about $25 or $30... Then you turn it on to start it and shut it off when it's warm... no more worrying about it choking in cool weather when it shouldn't... or you can install a primer into it... as per what Lennox has discribed... It's basically to push fuel into the cylinder... Start it and it goes from there!

Sorry your having troubles...

Thanks, I didn't even think about the cold! It's also raining.
I was trying to start it in the morning.
The mech guy that fixed the timing said it might be easier to start the bike if I push the air filter in and use the electric start.
Yes, I will see if I can get a manual choke.

I just want to ride it!?!?
