Hello everyone,

just joined the forum. picked up a 2008 zuma today, and im sooo happy. the dealer immediattly told me about the throttle mod, but they made it seem i just had to take this plastic clip out, and it will open up more, they never mentioned cutting the metal thing. i asked them to do it right then, but they said it would be better if u break in the engine first... im a biiger guy, 220lbs, and when i road it home i could hit 40mph no prob completely stock. is this normal? a buddy of mine swears it cant be stock, his only was going like 33-35mph and he is like 165lbs. does anyone have a step by step like picture turtorial on how to get to the throttle area to cut the disc? im not to much of a mechanic, but i follow instructions well, just kinda weary of taking it all apart with out step by step details. also, what pipe do you all recommend and will the older models fit the 2008 ?? thanks guys !

The Very First Batch Of Zumas Are Very Slow, The Newest Ones Have A Brass Tube Sticking Out Of The Bottom Of The Exhaust If It Has That Then It Moves Pretty Good, I Work At A Dealership And Bought The First One We Got, Then A Month Later We Got Another And A Friend Bought It, Much Faster It Has That Tube To Tune The Exhaust On It.

ill have to check on the exhaust see if it has that brass tubing.... found the service manual online to take apart the bike... got to the throttle cam, was kinda difficult to get in there with the dremel to saw off the extra metal. had to take the whole thing out from the hoses on either side, then was able to do a good job to shave it all out, now the throttle moves as it should. complete night and day difference in acceleration, and top speed rose, my GPS said 43mph on level ground. ill have to post some pics tomorrow.

Hey does the brass tube actually look brass? I bought an 08 about 3 1/2 weeks ago and mine is pretty quick. I have something down at the bottom of my exhaust but have no idea what it is.

ive checked out my exhaust, and didnt see anything. it was kind of dark in the garage so i might have missed it. Im about ready to install a Leo Vince ZX pipe, i dont know what do with that air hose that goes to the factory exhaust... anybody know?

what you need to do is take that re-circulating device off all together clamp both hose so no air gets in or out i did this on mine and noticed a big difference in top speed it added 3-5mph to the top end its still slow off the line though

zumaspartan-take the black smog box off the top of the tranny, I think there is only one phillips screw holding it on. I ripped the hose off the air box and put some electrical tape over it. Not to discourage you but I ran into a carb problems when i put a pipe on my 08 zuma. The stock carb has several restrictions on it.
#1-the throttle cam restriction-which you have addressed
#2-No air screw adjustment-(needed for fine tuning)
#3-No needle adjustment-(also need for tuning)

I removed my smog box and did the throttle cam as well, it ran ok, but not great, my zuma was running way to rich. (I might add I live at 6000ft above sea level, so my situation might be different than say someone living at sea level.)I tried everything and still couldn't get my 08 carb to not run rich. I ended up buying a used 2005 stock zuma carb-to fix my problems I was having.

If you find that it runs good with the pipe but you have a sluggish take off like ETHANK talks about, you my have a tranny issue- I suggest putting in lighter rollers and some 2000 rpm clutch rev springs
(fyi-stock 08 rollers are(15mm x 12mm)and 7.5grams each) you will have to play around with different lighter combos to get a better take off. I was using 3-5grams rollers and 3-7.5gram rollers and my bike pulled pretty hard off the line. Best of luck!! Wrench on!!

my Zuma is VERY slow. I bought a stage one from provo and it got even slower. It barely goes 30 mph on flat ground. Also from 0-10 the acceleration is slower than a walk. Can someone please help? I think its with the variator but i have no idea what it is. Ill be doing the throttle cam mod this weekend to see if that makes a diff. Will a stage II help at all?

Thanks

That ring that came with the Athena vario...the one you left out. It goes arround the shaft inside the vario with the rollers.

ATTN Tirefryer you have a 70cc kit on a 08 how did it run when you put it on? did it make much of a difference? I want to put one on mine but was told it would not fit. Much to find out it does

Ethank-Yes I'm running an Athena 70cc big bore kit-and yes It made a huge difference. But it will not run with the stock 08 carb or the stock 08 muffer because of the new restrictions.
I suggest locating a used 2005 stock carb and muffler, if you have to buy a new carb defiantly go with a bigger carb set up, like an Athena 17.5mm carb w/auto choke. Same with the pipe if you have to buy new there are lots of great aftermarket pipes out there!!
I got lucky and found a used 2005 stock carb and muffler on ebay for cheap. I've put about 250 miles on the new 70cc kit and it's running great. I also used the stock oil injector and premix a little 2cycle oil w/ the gas as well.
The Athena 70cc big bore kit was for the 02-05 zumas and fit perfectly on the 2008 zuma. The part # for the kit is:
Athena big bore kit #0931-0077-can be ordered at any yamaha dealer or any "parts unlimited" dealer.

Does a 2002 carb fit on a 08? I assume it would as the parts are the same for 02-05?

There is one on Ebay right now and I may want to pick it up and drop it in mine.

You can use an '08 pipe if you have to. I am running an Airsal T6 cylinder, '05 carb with upjet and an '08 pipe and it runs fine.

there is an air screw mixture it is just covered up by a cover, look on zumasrus.com. They say to turn the air screw mixture in the whole way then back it off 1/2 a turn. Also they sell a needle/pin for the carb to make it like the older ones and of course to do the throttle cam trick.
