Hey all, I have a 1983 Riva (jog) 50cc that has very low mileage and is a great scooter.

I was doing a cleaning on the scooter and was cleaning the battery posts and after cleaning the posts the scooter will not run once i switch it over to run mode.

As in, the scooter starts first time on start mode but when i switch the key over to run it immediately dies. It definitely seems like an electrical short of some sort.

Something must have shorted out with the small amount of water/baking soda I was using. The only thing under the battery is the rectifier, which still takes electrical current one direction with a multimeter, and the fuse which appears to be good. Anyone have any suggestions?

Could the switch itself be the problem?

I dont think the switch is a problem because it worked 30 seconds before I did anything with water. Im guessing something shorted out, i just dont know what it could have been

I know nothing at all about the Riva/Jog, but I have seen this very behavior in cars. Cars use a dropping resistor on the low voltage side of the coil to reduce the voltage output of the coil. When starting the resistor is bypassed to insure you have a strong spark while starting.

If the resistor fails, the engine starts but stops when the resistor bypass is removed (ie. moving the ignition switch to the run position.) If the Riva/jog has such a system that's probably what your looking for.

Hope this helps.
